Several streets have been hit by a power cut as police and fire services attended an incident nearby.

The A229 Upper Stone Street was partially obstructed heading southbound out of Maidstone town centre last night.

It comes after firefighters were called to reports of a fire issuing from a manhole cover on Upper Stone Street at around 4.34pm.

A spokesman for KFRS said: "One fire engine was sent to the scene but no firefighting action was required, and the scene was passed into the care of UK Power Networks. Stop time was 6.15pm."

A police cordon was put in place just after Lashings Bar and Grill before the motorcycle shop at the junction with Campbell Road.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "This incident relates to some work undertaken by UK Power Network. Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended."

Meanwhile, a power cut affected several roads in the area, stretching from Square Hill Road all the way down to Middlesex Road, near Molehill Primary Academy.

UK Power Networks said power would be back before 8.30pm.

Drivers have been told to expect delays of up to 40 minutes as traffic queued up to Chatham Road.
