Ramraiders grab cash machines from bank
10:03, 18 December 2004
A JCB was driven into the front of a bank early Saturday and two cash dispensers have been stolen.
The ram raid was at the Halifax in Week Street, Maidstone, just after 4.30am. Police have closed off one end of the road
to pedestrians and vehicles.
The digger was driven from Union Street into Week Street and smashed into the bank a number of times before the cash machines were taken.
The JCB had to be recovered from the front of the bank, and Maidstone
Borough Council were called to clear piles of debris from the street.
It is believed that a black pick-up was involved, which made off down Union Street from Week Street after the JCB was abandoned at the scene.
Sgt Richard Wingett, from Maidstone and Malling Police, said: "We have called the forensic guys so that's all sorted. We are just evidence collecting at the moment.
"As soon as the council have got it cleared up we can can put a barrier up and open it back up to the public.
"The public seem quite amazed."
Police are appealing for witnesses, and anyone with any information
should call 01622 608182 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
Police are also looking for more information on a white, flat-bed, Ford
transit pick-up truck, registration K190 MGU, which was found abandoned in Thorpe Lane, Cliffe.
