Part of Blue Bell Hill is to remain closed until tomorrow after a car fire damaged the carriageway.
The blaze broke out on the A229 link road between Taddington Wood Roundabout at Junction 2 of the M3 and the Lord Lees Roundabout at around 3.30pm.
One lane remains closed as highways staff carry out urgent repairs.
British Transport Police attended the scene, it is not yet known if anyone has been injured.
Traffic was temporarily held whilst emergency services moved vehicle to the inside lane.
The incident caused rush-hour traffic problems in the area, with queues backing up on the M2.
