A campaign to target uninsured motorists on Kent’s roads has ended with 17 cars being seized on the spot.

The force's roads policing unit took part in a national initiative to clamp down on motorists flouting the law.

During the week of action, 17 drivers were caught driving without insurance and one was given a summons to appear in court. All had their cars seized.

One of the drivers was also arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs.

The crackdown happened October 16 and 22.

Chief Inspector Richard Smeed, of Kent’s roads policing unit, said: "My officers have been focusing on road users who endanger others by driving uninsured vehicles, particularly criminals who have often been shown to be uninsured when on the road.

"Those caught driving without insurance stand to receive six points on their driving licence, a £300 fixed penalty fine and the seizure of their vehicle.

"For those who are summonsed to court the penalty can be greater.

"My message is clear; we will repeatedly target uninsured drivers so get your car insured as the penalty will be far higher than the premium you had to pay in the first place."
