Former Gills footballer Adam Birchall is hoping to score a success with a new business venture.
The 29-year-old, right, is the new owner of The Rafters, in Maidstone High Street.
Fans of the club, above Flaming Henry’s restaurant, were disappointed when it was taken over by a proprietor who was keen to book DJs rather than live musicians, for which the venue was well-known.
But the appointment didn’t last for long and Mr Birchall signed the lease six weeks ago.
The one-time Gillingham striker, who now plays for Bromley, intends to keep the nightspot’s original focus on bands and singers.
He said: “The Rafters is a really unique place where people can enjoy live music. I’ve always loved going to gigs and I’m really enjoying putting on shows.
“The feeling I get when I’m waiting for the show to start is similar to how I feel when I’m about to go on the pitch. Everyone is there, waiting for a good performance and I want make sure I deliver.”
Mr Birchall’s business partner Ibby Nurhakli, and his family, own the restaurant on the ground floor.
