It affected trains between Ashford International and London Victoria.
The lines reopened at 2pm but commuters were warned to expect further delays of up to 15 minutes until services had recovered.
One frustrated passenger - who was left waiting nearly 40 minutes for the 1.18pm service to leave Maidstone East - said: "The driver has invited passengers to go and get a cup of tea or something from the platform café and promised he won't leave without anyone if he's given clearance to go."
After Barming passengers were told the train would only be stopping at London, leaving those using minor stations to wait for another service.
Engineers said no damage has been done to the bridge.
