Truck driver held after M-way crash

00:00, 26 September 2003

A TURKISH lorry driver involved in a motorway collision near Maidstone is in police custody today as investigations into the crash continue.

His lorry was collision with another HGV parked along the hard shoulder near junction eight of the M20 at about 11.40pm last night.

The impact caused his lorry to shed the 24 tonnes of steel girders it was carrying across the London-bound carriageway.

Police closed off the motorway overnight in both directions as a precaution after the girders caused damage to 42 sections of the central crash barrier.

Four lanes of the motorway were re-opened shortly after 6am this morning but the fast lane of both carriageways remained closed this morning.

Neither driver was injured and no other vehicle was involved.

After the driver of the girder loaded lorry was arrested he was taken to Maidstone Police Station.
