Two children have been arrested after a town centre fire sparked a huge emergency response.

Crews, police and paramedics were called to a two-storey building in Sandling Road, Maidstone, after a blaze was "started deliberately" just after 1pm yesterday.

At its height, eight fire engines, and a height vehicle attended the scene to extinguish the flames in the building - which consists of an undercover car park and disused offices.

The road was shut to traffic for a couple of hours while multiple fire service vehicles, police cars and a search and rescue unit lined the street.

Workers from nearby buildings, including charity Demelza, lined the streets for hours as they waited to get back in to their offices or cars.

Police have confirmed two 13-year-old boys have since been arrested following the incident.

A spokesman said: "Officers and fire crews attended and the fire was extinguished with no reported injuries.

"Earlier today officers arrested two boys, aged 13 and from Maidstone, on suspicion of arson. They were taken into custody."

One witness who was near the Hare & Hounds pub said he could see smoke billowing from the building before a large emergency service response arrived on scene.
