Following the altercation, police say they all left in a vehicle which was described as a small car - which officers believe could have been a Fiat 500.

The incident happened near Mote Road and Chancery Lane last night at about 10pm.

DS Richard Crowhurst said: "An incident was witnessed, where a woman may have been in distress and subjected to an assault.

"It is unclear at this stage whether what has been reported may be a misunderstanding, or if any offences have taken place.

"Our officers have made a number of initial checks including house-to-house and CCTV enquiries and we are working to identify who the people were in this car and where they may have been headed.

"We are urging those involved to contact us, in order we can establish the full circumstances.

"We are also asking anyone else who may live nearby, or who was travelling in the area, to check CCTV systems or dashcams which may provide important information."

Anyone with information which may assist the investigation is asked to call 01622 604100, quoting reference 23-1410, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or their online form.
