Maidstone fell silent for a two-minute remembrance of those who gave their lives in conflict.

Councillor Derek Butler, mayor of Maidstone, was joined by Malcolm Walters, commanding officer for the Salvation Army, members of the Salvation Army band, serving officers, and members of the public for the Armistice Day ceremony.

The two-minute silence was held at 11am in The Mall, after a short service of hymns and prayers.

Many members of the public stopped their shopping to observe the silence, and many shoppers joined in with hymns as they walked past.

There was a reading of For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon, and Cllr Butler also dictated a short piece from the book of John.

The service concluded with those gathered singing the national anthem, God Save the Queen.
