Where to eat in Maidstone if you want to carry on Veganuary

05:00, 31 January 2022

As Veganuary comes to an end, hundreds of thousands of people will most likely be celebrating their month-long abstinence from meat a dairy with the biggest burger they can find.

But, a small percentage of the millions of people who opted for a plant-based diet in January will have fully pledged to the cruelty-free lifestyle, or at least opted to keep it going as long as they can.

After a successful month myself, I'm in the latter and will see how long I can last without a chicken burger, margherita pizza or sausage sandwich.

Luckily, my partner has been vegan for nearly five years now so I'm more clued in on most on where to get my vegan fix of food, especially in Maidstone.

Over the past couple of years the town has seen a huge rise in the number of restaurants or takeaways offering vegan-friendly options, but that's probably due to growing popularity of the lifestyle and diet.

If you're like me and part of a half meat-eater/half vegan household and on the look for some great burger options and some tasty chips then 7Bone in Earl Street and Notorious BRG at Lockmeadow's newly refurbished food hall.

Offering a menu full of burgers, seasoned sides and chips, as well as milkshakes they both also provide an alternative plant-based menu. And if you don't want to order it in you can visit Notorious BRG before a trip to the cinema, bowling or Gravity, or pop into 7Bone after browsing the shops in town.

Another popular eatery among Kent residents near the town centre is the fully vegan Rainbow Skull Grill which has been found in the car park of the White Horse Inn pub, along London Road.

However, the grill, which offers some tasty garlic bread, loaded fries and burgers such as the KFT Stinger Stack, The Ruby Rose and Baycon Double Cheese XL, is opening a new restaurant at the heart of the town centre in The Royal Star Arcade in mid-February.

If you fancy something a bit more mainstream then Wagamama's has made big changes to their menus in the past year and are now 50% vegan, much to the delight of Maidstone's young vegan activist Harry Bidewell, who picked the place as his favourite meal out.

For any people making the switch but concerned about their sweet tooth then don't fret as Maidstone has some incredible vegan bakers around.

Flo's Vegan Cakes is a small business set up during the pandemic and offers delicious cakes, cookies, donuts and more you can order to pick up or have delivered to your door.

If you fancy salted caramel, Victoria sponge, double chocolate chip, red velvet or any other flavour cake or cupcakes then Flo's Cakes, the only fully vegan cake business in Maidstone, is a must try.

The business, set up and ran by Jasmine Jenkins, offers wedding cakes, birthday cakes or special share boxes for Halloween, Valentine's Day, Christmas and other occasions.

If you want to enjoy some cake or savoury food while sitting down then Viva Las Vegans, found at the bottom of Fremlin's Walk, is a good option.

Having opened in November the town's first fully vegan coffee shop offers a calm atmosphere to enjoy some vegan bakes and drinks.
