A campaign to get the public talking to one another has launched this World Friendship Day.

Today Wendy Pfeiffer and a team of volunteers and organisations are out telling people It Matters to Natter.

The campaign was invented as a way of getting strangers to talk to one another and combat loneliness.

Call for more to be done to tackle loneliness

Ms Pfeiffer, manager of the West Kent Befriending Service, said: "We're trying to get people to talk to each other a little more.

"Instead of having their heads in their phone all the time we're trying to get people to have a simple conversation.

"It hasn't got to be a long one it can be a quick hello, how are you? That's all we're asking.

"We've had so many people getting involved. We're really lucky and that's where social media comes in.

"We've had Maidstone and Mid Kent Mind get involved the British Sign Language team in Maidstone and Makaton sign language are involved. We've got some videos teaching people how to say hello in sign language."
