A popular Maidstone nightspot is bidding farewell to the town.

Wonderland, in Barker Road, will close its doors today after almost three years at the centre of the town’s clubbing scene.

Revellers descended on the Lockmeadow venue for a Love Friday event followed by Pure Science drum and bass on Saturday.

On Sunday crowds are expected to flock to watch an afternoon of boxing.

The final event comes tonight in the shape of an under 18s foam party organised by Gridlock.

Acting manager Samantha Gray said: “It’s very sad for everyone in Maidstone to see Wonderland go and it's a massive loss to the night time economy. The club scene is now condensing in the town centre for better or worse.

“The massive turnout this weekend and variety of events shows what a popular and multi-purpose venue Wonderland has become.

“Those who attend the under 18s night will be the last people to dance here, which is fitting as they are the next generation. We're certainly going out with a bang.”

Mrs Gray added the closure will bring an end to a rich history of clubbing at Lockmeadow and there are no plans to relocate the venue to another part of the town.

The move comes as an application by Land Securities to transform the nightclub into a trampolining facility was approved by Maidstone Borough Council.

It is believed Gravity Fitness Limited will run the trampoline park which is expected to open later this year.

The £1.8 million transformation of the 2,129 sq m building, which has been a nightclub since the late 1990s and was previously Liquid and Envy, is part of a larger project to relaunch and re-brand Lockmeadow.

Lockmeadow Entertainment said redevelopment will ensure the site continues as Maidstone’s number one leisure destination.
