Workmen rescued in town centre blaze drama

FIREFIGHTERS today rescued three men who were trapped on the roof of a town centre store after a fire broke out.
The former Littlewoods store in Week Street, Maidstone, was at the centre of an evacuation that stretched 200 metres along Week Street and Union Street.
The blaze started shortly after 11.30am, although the cause has not yet been identified.
The three workmen trapped on the roof were helped to safety by fire crew, who then put out the blaze and secured the building.
The cordon was lifted at about 12.30pm. There were no reported injuries.
