A YOUNG man who died after the car he was driving collided with a stationary police car attending an earlier crash has been identified.
Insurance handler Craig Smart, 20, of Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, was travelling towards Maidstone on the A229 Blue Bell Hill at about 11pm on Friday, February 10, when the crash took place.
Fire crews from Maidstone and Medway attended as Mr Smart was trapped in his vehicle. He was taken to Maidstone Hospital but died early the next morning.
The police car he struck was one of several attending an accident that had taken place earlier that evening.
The incident is being investigated by Kent Police’s Serious Collisions Investigations Unit and has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. A police spokesman said this was usual practice when a police car was involved in a collision.
