Young people playing in the River Medway ignored warnings from firefighters to get out yesterday.

Five youngsters were spotted playing in the river with inflatable dinghies just after 5.30pm.

Crews were called amid concerns for the group, who were playing next to Bishops Way in Maidstone.

Despite firefighters warning of the river's dangers, the group stayed in the water.

Leanne McMahon, group manager for community safety, said: "The water can be very appealing on a hot day, but there are many hidden dangers that can turn what might seem like a bit of fun, into a tragedy.

"It may appear calm, but underneath the surface of the water there can be a multitude of hazards - strong under water currents, sharp objects and very cold water that can trigger cold water shock.

"Don’t take the risk - choose to swim in safe, authorised areas such as swimming pools or at life guarded beaches between the red and yellow flags."
