Maidstone Roller Dance Club enjoy big success at the British Championships

05:00, 09 November 2021

Brothers Zac and Oliver Martin triumphed at the British Roller Dance Championships.

They won gold medals as part of an eight-strong team from the Maidstone Roller Dance Club as the championships were held for the first time in two years.

The Martins' scores in Brentwood would have made them highly competitive at last month’s World Championships in Paraguay, highlighting just how well they performed.

Oliver’s total of 108.95 would have placed him sixth out of 15, surpassing his previous best of ninth, achieved in Paris three years ago.

Zac, meanwhile, would also have taken sixth in the junior worlds with his score of 87.76.

As well as titles for Oliver - his third senior men’s crown - and Zac, club coach Ann Odhams placed second in the classic (over-25s) age group and Laura Donoghue won her first championship medal, with third in the junior ladies.

Four youngsters making their first appearances all skated exceptionally well.

Lucy Aves and Anna Slokenberga were fourth and sixth respectively in the cadet category, with Katy Bray and Iza Jarvis fifth and seventh in the youth age group.

“As an indoor sport, we’ve suffered in the pandemic, so it was lovely to have the British Championships back," said Odhams.
