CHAMPIONSHIP cricket will return to Maidstone next summer and may yet have a long-term future in the county town.

Enthusiastic discussions between the county club, The Mote Cricket Club and Maidstone Borough Council have led to a four-day return against Gloucestershire next June, as well as a totesport League clash with Derbyshire.

With plans and cash set aside for winter improvements to toilet facilities, health and safety issues and access at The Mote, Kent’s chief executive Paul Millman is buoyant about the county’s return to a traditional style Maidstone Festival Week.

“During our discussions the officers of The Mote indicated a real desire to improve the facilities at the ground and to make The Mote a long-term focus for cricket development,” said Mr Millman.

“Because of Twenty20 fixtures it was not possible to play championship cricket in Maidstone last season, but the council have also pledged to help us guarantee increased commercial support for the Festival.

“We have been impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm and look forward to making the 2005 Maidstone Festival a real success.”

In welcoming the news, Maidstone Borough Council leader Cllr Mick Stevens said: “As a follower of the traditional game I am delighted that championship cricket is returning to The Mote next year and, I hope, forever.

“Kent County Cricket Club and The Mote are to be applauded for their commitment to the Maidstone Festival and cricket development in Maidstone.”
