Cup tie to remember for teenage ‘keeper
12:59, 10 January 2005
YOUNG Exeter City goalkeeper Paul Jones earned himself a place in the FA Cup history books, as his side held Premiership giants Manchester United to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.
The 18-year-old from Maidstone made a string of fine saves to deny United’s illustrious band of strikers and earn Exeter a money-spinning replay, which will be shown live on BBC television.
Although the Old Trafford side were not at full strength, several international stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes, featured in their line-up.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson described the result as the worst FA Cup performance during his 18-year reign at the club and apologised to the fans who booed the team off the pitch at full-time.
Should Exeter complete United's humiliation in the replay, Jones and co will face another Premiership side Middlesbrough at St James' Park.
Speaking exclusively to KM-fm after the match, his dad Roger said one moment will live long in the memory...
