Busy Cyril Davey still plays, coaches and umpires cricket – aged 74.
The Maidstone man is enjoying his 41st season playing for Kent Village League team Loose.
He’s the club’s leading wicket-taker this year with eight and on Tuesday represented Kent over-70s against Australia over-70s in Sittingbourne. The tourists closed on 240-7 from 45 overs and won by 18 runs after Kent made 222-1 in reply.
Davey turns out for the XL Club, a series of district over-40 sides who play schools all over the country, is an umpire in the Kent League, coaches in schools and has no plans to slow down.
He said: “I still remember my first game for Loose. It was at Penenden Heath and I was out first ball.
“I’ll keep going as long as my legs allow. I’ve broken fingers and have a problem with a sciatic nerve, which I’m taking medication for, but I’ve been pretty fortunate with injuries.
“I’m playing with people who I coached years ago at Loose School when they were 10 or 11.
"It’s funny because they pull my leg these days and try to tell me what I’m doing wrong."
