George Elokobi considered Maidstone’s goalless draw at Welling a point gained.

On paper, it was a game the Stones were tipped to win, given the sides’ contrasting form.

For while Maidstone are riding high in National League South - climbing to third after Tuesday night - the Wings are struggling in the bottom four and on Saturday were thrashed 5-1 at Torquay.

But it was never going to be easy and with United not at their best against stubborn opponents, Elokobi was content with a draw.

“It’s a point gained, in my opinion,” he said.

“Obviously, Welling have gone to Torquay and lost so you expect a reaction after the manager dug them out.

“It’s important we understood that and we said when we came here, if we don’t get three points, make sure we don’t get beat, and that’s what the boys have carried out.

“Could we have been better in terms of our possession and our passing?

“Yes, we could have been but at times like this, on a cold October night, in a local derby, it’s not going to be pretty all the time and the boys gave it a right old go.

“You’re not going to play well every single game or every single week, so credit to our boys for the way we went about it.

“It’s important we keep looking at the positives at this stage of the season.

“We’ve got to keep chipping away and keep stacking the points, however they come.

“It’s not zero points, it’s a point gained in the right direction, away from home.”

Maidstone created little in the way of chances and were grateful to goalkeeper Lucas Covolan, centre-back Reiss Greenidge and the woodwork as Welling threatened to snatch a late winner.

“The biggest positive was the togetherness shown,” said Elokobi.

“The boys kept going all the way to the final whistle.

“It was important we at times soaked up the pressure from Welling and we stood tall.

“I thought Lucas Covolan was excellent, I thought he made some terrific saves but you have to look at it as a whole.

“We haven’t conceded, which is a plus, that’s another clean sheet added to the tally, and as defenders you have to look at it this way.

“As a team, yes, in possession we could have been better, but out of possession we were a bit better in stopping the ball going in the back of our net.”
