George Elokobi said it was a privilege for defenders to learn from him after Maidstone’s victory at Dartford.

The Stones made it back-to-back clean sheets with their 2-0 win over the Darts at Princes Park.

Reiss Greenidge impressed in the middle of a three-man defence with Paul Appiah and Harry Kyprianou either side as George Fowler started a three-match ban.

Boss Elokobi was impressed as Greenidge came out on top against brother Jordan but it’s all about keeping standards high.

“When you’re playing in the centre of the three, that we’re playing today, you have to make sure that you’re switched on at all times,” said the former Wolves defender.

“You have to cover both centre-halves by your side and make sure nothing goes past you, that you’re organsied and win those aerial duels and he was very good, but there’s still plenty to carry on working on.

“You can never rest on your laurels with George Elokobi because I always find that extra work to give you, always find that extra little bit of skill that you need to learn and who is not privileged to be learning from someone like myself, to be honest?

“And that’s why we keep working and we keep making them better all the way to the end of the season, one game at a time, one training sesson at a time, but it’s not just Reiss, it’s the entire backline and those on the bench as well.

“If you call yourself a defensive player, you’ve got to put in the work and everyone is putting in the work to make sure when it comes to game day then they can show their skills.”

Maidstone are back in the National League South play-off places after completing the double over relegation-threatened Dartford, moving up two spots to sixth.

Liam Sole struck in added time at the end of the first half and Jephte Tanga clinched victory towards the end, by which time Darts keeper Billy Terrell had been sent off.

Elokobi had plenty to say on the touchline during the first half which looked set to end goalless before Sole’s fine strike.

“You’ve got to look at it and always be observant,” he said.

“You’ve got to make sure we keep our players on their toes and make sure they’re not switching off because it only takes one lapse of concentration and a goal is scored in a second.

“Our job is to ensure we keep our players organised, especially out of possession, and those instructions were clear and precise.

“We wanted to play in a certain way.

“They had one forward and and I wasn’t happy because we weren’t playing and capitalising on the numerical advantage we had at the back.

“We have to try and build the play. We can’t play to their strength.

“They wanted us to go long early but we had the chance to build the play up from our defensive unit and it was important we didn’t miss our midfield unit as well because they are good players in there.

That’s why I was a little bit animated.”

By full-time, and with the message having got through, Elokobi was delighted with another three points against a Darts side looking to impress new manager Adrian Pennock.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game for us away from home at Dartford,” said Elokobi.

“It’s always a hard game to play against a good side in Dartford.

“They’ve got their strengths and they’ve got their limitations as well but it’s not just that, they’ve got a new manager as well so every one of their players is trying to play for a contract come the end of the seaosn.

“Everyone is fighting for points at this stage but it was important to come here, operate within our strategy and make sure tactically we got it right in how set up in terms of countering their shape, their formation and their personall and I thought our boys were terrific today.”
