Midfielder Bivesh Gurung was “nearly in tears” after being offered a contract at hometown club Maidstone United.
Gurung came through the youth ranks at the Gallagher Stadium before joining Crystal Palace’s academy in 2017.
He signed for Margate at the start of this season after spells in Sweden and Norway, with his performances at Hartsdown Park leading to a dual-registration arrangement with the Stones.
The 20-year-old made his debut as an early second-half substitute in United’s goalless draw at Havant a fortnight ago, impressing manager Hakan Hayrettin, who has rewarded him with an 18-month contract.
“He’s signed, he’s our player, he’s a Maidstone lad, he was nearly in tears when I offered him a deal,” said Hayrettin.
“He hugged me and everything. He deserves a contract.
“One of my criteria as Maidstone manager is to get homegrown players.
“He’s Maidstone born and bred, he’s hungry, he’s determined and he’s passionate about the club. He’s one for the future.”
In other squad news, under-23 goalkeeper Harley Earle has signed an 18-month deal with the Stones, while fellow stopper Billy Johnson has gone on loan to Glebe.
Maidstone have also signed another goalkeeper, ex-Dover man Yusuf Mersin, on non-contract terms.
He offers competition to Tom Hadler, as on-loan Millwall man Ryan Sandford is sidelined with an ankle ligament injury.
