Hockey girl 'Charlie' gets England call
00:00, 24 January 2003
CHARLOTTE Eastwell, a pupil at Maidstone Girls' Grammar School, has been named in the England Under-16 hockey squad.
Charlotte, known to her friends as Charlie, received the call this week after a successful trial game.
The 15-year-old said: "I didn't expect to get selected. I just went for the trial game, tried my best and got in."
Charlotte, who has only been playing the game for two seasons, has worked her way through the 4th and 3rd teams. She now keeps goal for Maidstone seconds, although she occasionally gets drafted into the first team.
She was picked to play in the Kent Under-15 team in March 2002 and then was selected for the East of England U15 team in October 2002.
The news comes as another boost for the town's hockey club. Four Maidstone girls have had trials for England in two years. Two, Hannah Buchan and Tash Brennan, who are both now furthering their hockey careers at Canterbury, have already made their international debuts.
