Huge turnout for roller dance championships

MORE than 200 young skaters from all over Britain competed in the two-day Maidstone Roller Dance Club Open Championship held at Chatham's Buckmore Park. The event attracted five Kent clubs.
As well as the host club, which meets at Mote Park, Maidstone, and the Stirling Centre, Rochester, there were entrants from the Kent Artistic Roller Dance Club, from Sittingbourne, Herne Bay United, Pegasus, also from Herne Bay and the Gillingham-based Medway Roller Dance Club.
Kent Artistic gained the most points of any visiting team and they swept the board in the preliminary free skating event on Saturday, when Lucy Mansfield took first place, Vicki Kemp came in second and Megan Collins was third.
The host club excelled in the free skating events and collected all three medals in the duo free skating section, as well as the majority of places in the solo and novelty classes.
The next big event for the Maidstone club is in November when the precision team will be representing Great Britain in the world championships being held in Italy.
Further information about membership can be obtained from secretary Roger Watson on 01622 671716.
