Dennis McCann’s a European champion after winning his rematch against Ionut Baluta on Saturday night – but there’s much more to come.

McCann, from Maidstone, faced Romanian Baluta for the EBU crown at the 02 Arena in London.

He produced a superb performance to out-gun his busy opponent, looking the more assured fighter throughout as all three judges handed the him the title with the scorecards reading 120-108 and two 117-111s.

Straight after the fight, ‘The Menace’ McCann was looking ahead, saying: “There are some good names out there, Liam Davies (16-0), a fantastic name, fantastic fighter. Shabaz Masoud (13-0) is out there as well.

“I’m 23 years of age and I’m going to be world champion!

“I said since day one, since my first fight, that I’ll be the world champion.

“I want more Haribos, more belts and more money! Whoever Frank (Warren) gives me next, let’s have it.”

The fight came after fellow Maidstone boxer Sean Noakes had seen off Inder Bassi to win the English welterweight title.

McCann and Baluta met a year earlier at York Hall but that match was deemed a technical draw following a bad cut for the Maidstone man following a clash of heads.

Both boxers traded insults pre-fight and they delivered a great spectacle at a packed O2 - a fine fight to get the crowd going ahead of Derek Chisora’s meeting with Joe Joyce.

The ringside commentator for TNT Sports described McCann’s performance as one of “precision, preciseness and vision.”

Baluta often seemed unsteady on his feet and went down a few times, claiming they were slips, but proved to be a game opponent, often swinging and missing against the Maidstone man but always dangerous.

McCann never looked in trouble and it seemed as though he was going to get the KO he craved in the 12th and final round but the Romanian spat out his gumshield to get a much-needed breather.

McCann deservedly got the decision from all three judges to add the European belt to his British and Commonwealth titles.
