In-form Matt McClure says he's still learning his role at Maidstone.

He's clearly getting to grips with it, if his hat-trick against St Albans is anything to go by.

But after John Still revealed he "dug him out" at half-time, McClure spoke about his position playing behind main striker Ibby Akanbi.

He said: "John just gave me a little nudge at half-time. Obviously I'm still learning. That's not my normal position.

"I'm playing a little bit deeper, playing off Ibbs, who does the hardest work for me, running in behind, and I have to sit around their defensive man.

"I've got to get a little more tactically aware of him and the job the two gaffers want me to do but I'm enjoying myself.

"I've played on the left of a three for the last year so it's nice to be back down the middle.

"At the moment I'm cheating a little bit, trying to get too high, which is what they're shouting at me for."

McClure's opener against St Albans was his third headed goal in a row, following efforts against Dorking and Cheshunt.

He may not be a giant but he knows how to use his head.

He said: "I'm playing in a team now that when the ball's wide I know it's going to come into the box and I can attack it.

"I'm not the tallest but I've got a good jump and good timing, so hopefully I can get a few more."

McClure made the headlines but felt Maidstone's overall performance against St Albans was good as they moved up to ninth in National League South.

He said: "I thought we played some better football as well, which was pleasing.

"There were a few two-minute spells where we weren't quite on it but on the whole, it was a good performance from the boys, a clean sheet and another four goals."
