Maidstone United defender Lewis Knight set to face former club St Albans after testing time on the sidelines

06:00, 17 January 2020

Lewis Knight's return to the Maidstone team has come just in time to face his former club.

Knight joined from St Albans last summer but was transfer-listed in October and found himself back at Clarence Park on loan.

He appeared to have played his last game for the Stones but Ryan Johnson's foot injury opened the door for Knight to step back into central defence at Havant a fortnight ago.

Head of football John Still described his performance that day as faultless and felt he did well against Hemel Hempstead on Tuesday night, so he has every chance of retaining his place at St Albans this Saturday.

Knight said: "It's come about through injuries but I've played the last couple of games.

"We knew the squad would be tested over Christmas and New Year and George (Elokobi) said a couple of weeks ago we'd all be needed so you have to stay alert and ready in case you come back in.

"Going back to St Albans, it'll be nice to see some friendly faces but there are no friends when it comes to a game - we're all professional.

"It'll be weird at the same time because I went back on loan there a couple of months ago and before playing at Havant, my last game was for them.

"But you do what you can to play games and I felt that was the right move for me at the time."

Knight remains on the transfer list at Maidstone but has shown character to keep his head up and take his chance.

He said: "It’s been difficult but there's unfinished business here for me.

"It has tested me but to come back, I feel that shows strength of character.

"I’ve always believed in my ability but, to be honest, when I lost my place I don’t think I was doing enough, I wasn’t up to standard.

"But with a run of games, I’ve always said that’s when you get your fitness and your touch and the basics come easier to you.

"You’ve always got to believe you can get back in.

"Circumstances with injuries have probably helped my cause but I’ve kept working hard and doing my extras.

"We'll see how we go but I think I've done all right in the last couple of games.

"I can definitely build on what I've done. I just have to take it game by game."
