Sha’mar Lawson is hopeful of staying at Maidstone for the rest of the season.

Midfielder Lawson is due to play the final match of his initial one-month loan from Millwall when the Stones visit York this Saturday (3pm).

The youngster has impressed in a struggling team and has discussed extending his stay with manager Hakan Hayrettin. The final decision lies with Millwall.

“I’ve spoken to the gaffer here,” said Lawson.

“He’s happy to extend to the end of the season.

“We just need to speak to Millwall about that and see where we go from there. I’m happy to stay.

“I’m enjoying it here. I’ve just got to do as well as I can.

“I’m representing myself, Millwall and Maidstone.”

Lawson, 19, joined the Lions from Mansfield last summer after going on trial at the Championship club.

In what is his first loan, he’s produced a string of all-action displays in Maidstone’s midfield.

Millwall team-mate and former Stones loanee Ryan Sandford told him what to expect in the National League - and Lawson has taken to it like a duck to water.

“I spoke to Ryan briefly,” said Lawson. “He said to me it’s physical, just get stuck in, but that’s what I do anyway.

“I enjoy that. It’s second nature to me.

“I’m not shy of getting stuck in. My game is about showing desire, getting up and down, getting tight to people, winning the ball back, driving through and linking up with the strikers and wingers.

“I’ve learnt a lot of lessons in the time I’ve been here.

“Even though we aren’t winning games, it’s good experience for me.

“I feel like I’m doing well. I just need to keep pushing and working hard for the team.

“I want to get in the first team at Millwall - that’s a focus for me - but right now I’m focusing on developing and doing as well as I can here.

“I feel you can make you own pathway to the first team if you’re doing well.

“While I’m here, I’m just trying to get better, listening to the gaffer and see where I can improve and add to my game.

“I feel like I’m getting better for the experience.

“I’m managing the game well, getting out players and being proactive and not reactive.

“I’ve got the hunger and desire, it’s just putting it out on the pitch and letting me football do the talking.”
