Maidstone manager Hakan Hayrettin has spoken of his desire to keep George Elokobi involved at the Gallagher.

Elokobi retired at the end of the season after a 19-year career, bowing out a champion as United won National South.

A fairytale ending saw the veteran defender score in his final appearance and leave the field to a guard of honour before collecting the league trophy with Gavin Hoyte.

Wolves legend Elokobi was injured for a large chunk of the season but remained a big influence behind the scenes.

Hayrettin would like to draw on his experience and knowledge in some capacity and will speak to the 36-year-old, who is also on the academy coaching staff.

“I’m going to talk to George next week about a role at the club,” said Hayrettin.

“Firstly, he’s my friend; secondly, he’s an exceptional professional; thirdly, I think the club could benefit from having George around. That’s my opinion.

“George has been exemplary in the time he’s been here.

“We started something together three years ago, we said we were going to win the league in that time, and we did it.

"We might even have done it the year before, because I think we'd have been there or thereabouts had Covid not stopped the season.

“I just want to speak to him and see what we can do.

“George is going to be sought-after because he’s a great professional who can do so many things.

“I know he’s enjoyed it here doing the academy. Let’s see what he says.”
