Sam Noakes produced an impressive win on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London.

The Maidstone boxer beat Delmar Thomas in a meeting of two unbeaten prospects on the live BT Sport show, winning with a first-round stoppage.

Victory takes Noakes’ professional record to 5-0.

Noakes set the win up with a heavy shot to the head, followed by an uppercut, before finishing his man off with a big right hand. Referee Bob Williams waved it off immediately with over a minute of the first round remaining.

“I’m over the moon,” declared Noakes after the win.

“I was expecting four to five hard rounds but I’m happy with that. I was just warming up!”

Thomas - 5-0 before the fight - was unhappy with the result and refused to acknowledge the victor in the ring post-fight but Noakes’ barrage had given Williams no option, the Nottingham boxer having taken several solid shots to the head.

Five-times national amateur champion Noakes, 23, had been aggressive and on the front foot from the off, wasting no time in wrapping up another victory of his fledgling professional career. The Maidstone boxer is trained by Alan Smith at the iBox Gym in Bromley and managed by Frank Warren.

Speaking of his opponent’s reaction to the defeat, Noakes said: “He trains hard, he is in good shape, it’s a big stage and he wanted to do well but it wasn’t his night. He was frustrated.

“I would have probably been just as distraught. I would have been in the middle of the ring for the arm to be raised but I would be out of there quick with my bottom lip quivering!

“He wasn’t as fit as me and he was open, with his chin up and whatever level you are at that is a bad thing to do, especially with me being a short come-forward fighter. It was perfect for me, I was well happy.

“When they open up a bit more you can get your shots off and it only takes one for them to think ‘I’ve been hit with a good shot there’ and you can jump on them like I did a bit.”
