Mark Gall opened the scoring the last time Maidstone played Yeovil in the FA Cup.

Stones legend Gall gave United the lead in a first-round tie at Watling Street in November 1989, with a superb strike from future England international Warren Barton clinching a 2-1 success.

The season before, prolific Gall scored a hat-trick as United celebrated a 5-0 victory over the Glovers en route to winning the Conference and promotion to the Football League.

Gall, 52, said: “I don’t remember the hat-trick but I’m glad to hear I was doing quite well back then!

“I do remember the cup game because it was around the time I started to establish myself in the team as Steve Butler’s partner under Keith Peacock.

“I’d been sub for a bit, then it kicked off for me away to Carlisle, just before the Yeovil game. Me and Butts were like Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole. We didn’t really practise what we were going to do, we just gelled and fed off one another."

Gall looks out for his old club’s results and has been impressed by their climb to National League South after two promotions in three years.

He likes the way Stones are going about their business and hopes to see them back in the Football League.

He said: “They’ve had a taste of it, even though it was a good few years ago. They’ve got a good manager – you can tell that by the promotions and the results this season – and they’re doing things the right way."
