A bumper crowd of more than 2,300 fans saw Margate beat Maidstone in the biggest game of the season in the Ryman League Premier Division.
Ryan Moss scored the only goal at Hartsdown Park on Tuesday night as Gate moved to within two points of title rivals United at the top.
Tonbridge Angels lost 2-1 at home to high-flying Leiston.
Michael Brothers scored a second-half winner for the visitors after Angels' Alex Teniola had cancelled out Patrick Brothers' opener.
Whitstable are fifth in Ryman League Division 1 South after a 4-1 home win against Carshalton.
Tom Loynes put Town in front with Ian Pulman scoring either side of half-time to give the hosts a 3-1 lead after Brendan Murphy-McVey equalised.
Matty Guila made sure of the win with Whitstable's fourth just after the hour.
An injury-time equaliser from Jordan Wells saved Hythe Town in a bottom-of-the-table clash at Walton Casuals.
Phil Stevenson's penalty put Town in front after the break but Gabriel Odunaike levelled two minutes later and Malik Ouani put Casuals in front.
Wells made it 2-2 but Hythe dropped to second-bottom after Folkestone's shock 2-0 defeat at strugglers East Grinstead, whose scorers were Sam Schaaf and Keiron Pamment.
Herne Bay had Gary Sayer sent off at the end of their 2-1 defeat at Redhill.
Joe Goldsmith and Sam Butler put Redhill in charge before Stuart King pulled a goal back.
Chatham were beaten by a last-minute goal in a 2-1 defeat at Harlow in Ryman League Division 1 North.
On-loan Dagenham striker Mason Bloomfield gave Chats an early lead with his first goal for the club.
But David Cowley levelled on the hour and Alex Read grabbed the winner.
