Maidstone ABC teenager Nathan Williams impresses at England Boxing Junior Championships

05:00, 09 April 2023

Nathan Williams finished runner-up at the England Boxing Junior Championships - in just his fourth bout.

Williams, 14, of Maidstone ABC, put up a great fight against Accrington opponent Crimea Varey in the under-75kg cadet final in Wigan at the end of last month.

Varey was awarded a 3-2 split decision but Williams could be proud of his performance.

“It was very, very close,” said Maidstone coach Joe Smith.

“We didn’t get the decision unfortunately but Nathan boxed really well.

“He listens to everything you tell him and trains really hard. Everything we trained for, he tried to do on the day.

“He was really unlucky but did well even to be at the England Championships.”

Maidstone, based at Heather House in Park Wood, were only formed in 2018.

They’ve had boxers at the England Championships previously but they were lads who’ve joined from other clubs.

“It would have been quite fitting if Nathan won,” said Smith.

“We’ve been to the finals before but Nathan’s a homegrown lad who joined us a beginner.”

Maidstone ABC have their home show coming up on May 27.
