National glory for grammar's rugger boys

MAIDSTONE Grammar School are the national Under-15s champions after a 33-7 victory over Oakham at Twickenham.
After a season of attack-minded rugby, MGS head coach Martin Holmes was delighted by his side’s all round display in the Daily Mail Schools Vase final.
"All credit to Oakham because they put us under a lot of pressure but we defended superbly," Holmes said.
"In most of our games this season we haven’t had to do much defending because we have been allowed to attack so that was something new I discovered about the side.
"The scoreline should have probably been a bit closer than it was but our key players performed on the day.
Two of those key players are winger Nik Van Mol and centre Joseph Bedford and though Oakham had identified them as the main threat, they were powerless to prevent a brace of tries from each.
Oakham had conceded only four tries in six games en route to the final but Maidstone ran in five.
Ten minutes of early Oakham pressure saw full back Crhis Powell and centre Robert James almost penetrate the Maidstone line but once the danger was repelled, Maidstone cut loose.
Scrum half Edward Laurent broke the deadlock with a superb 40-metre burst, which full back Leo Fedorcio converted.
Van Mol’s pace then stretched Oakham’s defence and the winger was able to off-load to Bedford who supplied the finish with Fedorcio converting from the touchline.
Van Mol struck the decisive blow six minutes into the second half when Oakham failed to haul down the Maidstone winger who squeezed in at the corner.
When Bedford slipped his tackler and crossed for his second try it looked like being a rout but Oakham battled back with flanker Torsten Sherwood muscling his way over for a try which Ryan Keal improved.
But Van Mol had the last word, rounding off an attack started by fly-half Thomas Lane’s diagonal run and perfectly-timed pass. Fedorcio added the extras to start the celebrations.
Maidstone: Leo Fedorcio; James Sullivan, Jamie Wong, Joseph Bedford, Nik Van Mol, Thomas Lane (captain), Edward Laurent, Thomas Cummins, Robert Munro, Alexander Knight, John Haggart, Thomas Knight, Toby Smith, Thomas Jarrett, James Iles. Replacements: Matthew Vickers, Neil Dibben, James Mackeddie, Akash Pancholi, Oliver Andrews, Timothy Kamps, Ben Craddock.
