George Porter is in no hurry to return to the Football League after joining Maidstone United.

Porter is back where it all began, in the Ryman League Premier Division, following his release by League 2 Dagenham.

The tricky winger started his career at Cray Wanderers before a shock move to Leyton Orient in 2010. Burnley bought him for £90,000 two years later, but injury prevented him playing a Championship game and he had loan spells at Colchester and AFC Wimbledon before leaving Turf Moor for Rochdale.

A switch to League 2 Dagenham followed last summer, with Porter a regular in the side at the start of the season, but after 23 appearances for the Daggers his contract was cancelled.

Ex-Maidstone midfielder Luke Rooney suggested a move to the Gallagher Stadium and a deal was done with boss Jay Saunders on Monday night.

Porter, 22, said: “Two weeks ago I was in the squad at Dagenham and then it came out that I wouldn’t be staying. I’m here now, there’s 16 games left and the aim is to get promotion.

“I’ll see how things go. I’m not going to start saying I’m going to play here for so long and then move. I’ve not been playing consistently over the last year and the main thing is to get back playing.

“The club’s in the Ryman League but they won’t be there long. They’ve got a set-up any Conference club would be happy with.”
