Maidstone have pulled off one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history by beating Ipswich Town in the fourth round.

George Elokobi’s National League South side stunned the Championship high-fliers, who sit 98 places above them, to reach the last 16 for the first time.

Lamar Reynolds’ breakaway opener gave the visitors an unlikely lead before a crowd of almost 28,000 at Portman Road.

Jeremy Sarmiento levelled early in the second half but Sam Corne, the hero of Maidstone’s third-round win over Stevenage, scored the winner in front of millions of TV viewers.

Portman Road drips in history when you walk around the place, including statues of Bobby Robson and Alf Ramsey, putting into context the enormity of Maidstone even being here.

Stones boss Elokobi emerged from the team bus to deliver a rousing speech to supporters.

“We’re going to come here and we’re going to give it our absolute best,” he told waiting fans. And, boy, didn’t they just?

Championship high-fliers Ipswich bossed possession - as everyone knew they would.

The visitors’ goal led a charmed life at times as Ipswich hit the post twice in the opening stages though Sarmiento and Omari Hutchinson’s deflected effort from the edge of the box, while George Edmundson put a free header wide from a corner.

Stones keeper Lucas Covolan was also busy, making fine saves from Hutchinson, twice, including a one-on-one, and captain Sam Morsby’s 25-yarder.

Ipswich’s football was a pleasure to watch but they just couldn’t break the deadlock as Maidstone worked and worked to keep them at bay, Paul Appiah to the fore with a good block from Hutchinson, while Sone Aluko wasted a glorious opening.

Maidstone saw precious little of the ball but they made it count with an extraordinary breakaway opener in the 43rd minute.

Liam Sole released Reynolds in the Ipswich half and he continued his run before brilliantly dinking the ball over Christian Walton, sending 4,500 away fans into delirium.

Ipswich continued to boss the ball in the second half but Maidstone had a couple of chances to counter and ease the pressure.

The equaliser finally arrived in the 57th minute though, with the ball worked to Sarmiento whose shot took a slight deflection off Stones skipper Gavin Hoyte on its way past Covolan.

If home fans thought the floodgates would open, they were in for a shock as Maidstone regained the lead in the 66th minute.

Opening goalscorer Reynolds - what a day he was having - intercepted a pass and freed Corne, who ran through and confidently beat Walton.

Ipswich pushed for the equaliser but the defending was heroic with United getting men behind the ball, restricting the hosts to half-chances until Covolan made a magnificent point-blank save from Conor Chaplin’s header.

Covolan was at it again in the last minute of normal time with a superb one-handed stop from another Chaplin header.
