Rugger team on the verge of promotion

MAIDSTONE Rugby Club are on the brink of achieving their season’s aim of promotion - but you wouldn’t know it by listening to club captain Jon Sargent.
His side head the London 3 South East division by four points with three games to go and a points difference advantage of 177 over second placed Purley.
Better still, after Saturday’s game with second-bottom Charlton Park, they host the league whipping-boys Cobham, who have shipped 266 points in their last three games.
But Sargent remains wary of complacency, saying: "Mathematically it (promotion) is not confirmed if we win at Charlton Park so our focus is just on getting the two points.
"They’re going to be big up front and try to push us around. We need to keep our focus and keep our minds off the respective league positions. Having said that, we know that if we play as well as we can, we’ll be too strong for them.
"But we can’t go into the game thinking it’s all over. We have to win the two points, not expect them to be given to us. They’re fighting to stay in the division and every team in the league, with the possible exception of Cobham, are capable of beating anyone else on their day."
Maidstone have topped the table since their opening day victory, coincidentally a 36-13 win against Charlton Park, and the team have grown used to opponents raising their game against them.
But just one defeat and three draws in 19 games has put them tantalisingly close to promotion.
Sargent admitted: "It will be nice to get promotion secured and be able to relax a bit. April 9th is the date we have targetted for some time now as the day it will be confirmed, so if we win tomorrow, the champagne will be on ice for after the home game with Cobham next week.
"It’s been eight months of hard work for a lot of people at the club. It’s what we set out to do last year and now it’s within our reach.
"This season has been a good time to be at Maidstone with the buzz around the club and it will give us a great platform to build on for next season."
