Maidstone will celebrate like champions if they beat Dulwich – even if Hendon win as well.

Stones are six points clear of their title rivals ahead of their penultimate Ryman League, Premier Division match on Saturday.

Hendon, who visit Grays, have a game in hand but victory at Champion Hill would take United to 97 points and effectively seal the title due to their superior goal difference. They are 19 goals better off than second-placed Hendon.

Stones boss Jay Saunders said: “Mathematically it’s not over if we both win on Saturday but it is really, isn’t it?

“If we then lost to East Thurrock on the last day and Hendon kept winning and managed to make up 19 goals, or whatever it is after the weekend, you’d have to say they deserve to win it.

“It would be hard not to celebrate if we beat Dulwich. It’s a tricky one if it’s not mathematically done but the boys would probably have a drink and deservedly so.

“I think Hendon would feel that’s it as well but I’d like to win our last two games and get to 100 points."

Saunders, who is missing suspended left-back Tom Mills, led Stones to the FA Cup second round this year but winning the league would top that.

He said: “You set out at the start of the season to win the league but I don’t know how I’ll feel if we do it. It would certainly be my biggest achievement in football."
