Aaron Simpson had to make the challenge that led to his dismissal in Maidstone's FA Cup exit at Wrexham.

Teenager Simpson was sent off for bringing down Wes York early in the second half at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday night, with the Reds opening up a 2-0 lead from the spot.

Ten-man Stones pulled a goal back before Wrexham added a late third.

Right-back Simpson said: "It wasn't intentional. I was trying to run across and his legs got caught in mine.

"I knew the card was coming, as I was the last man, but if I didn't do it then he would have scored anyway. It was one of those things I kind of had to do.

"You don't want to be the player that does it but those things happen in football."

Simpson only found out he was playing on the day of the game with Maidstone unwilling to take a chance on captain Steve Watt's fitness.

He added: "Obviously I was a bit nervous. It's difficult. I wanted to play the best I could.

"Getting sent off it's heartbreaking really but, then again, I did what I had to do. I have to try and bounce back and not let it get to me too much."

Stones' experienced players were quick to put an arm round Simpson after the game.

The youngster wanted to thank Maidstone fans for their support but was stopped by home officials.

He said: "I wasn't even allowed to go out and clap the fans afterwards, which was obviously very disappointing.

"They said a previous player went back out on to the pitch and caused a bit of trouble or something so they made me stay in here."
