Simon Walton believes there are good foundations in place as Maidstone prepare to name their new manager.
Co-owner Terry Casey says the Stones intend to announce Harry Wheeler’s successor this week with the club six points from safety in the National League.
Caretaker bosses Walton and Tristan Lewis have enjoyed their stint, winning three of their six games, but know tonight’s Kent Senior Cup quarter-final at Dartford could prove their final match in charge.
Walton said: “There’s something to build on at this club.
“It’s a young group of players, regardless of who stays and goes.
“There’s a good core group of players that I think can produce results, whether it be this level or not this level.
“There’s a good base and a good foundation for somebody to build something here.”
Walton is contracted as a player until the end of the season and will continue to give everything if his spell in the dugout is over.
He said: “I’m a player, I’m here till the end of the season.
“There’s 16 league games left and we’ll keep going.
“I’ll keep going as a player, that’s all I’ve ever done all my career.
“I’ll keep going, I’ll keep fighting, biting, scratching, whatever, that’s what I’ll do.
“Whatever capacity the club wants me to stay on in, we’ll keep battling to the end, that’s all I can promise.
“I can’t promise we’ll win every game, I can’t promise we’re going to stay up, but I can promise we’ll keep battling and fighting right to the end.”
Maidstone announced last night that sports scientist Craig Lewis has left the club to rejoin Wheeler at Billericay.
