Maidstone United striker Alex Akrofi talks about his super-sub appearance in victory at Concord Rangers

Alex Akrofi’s determination to make a difference soon paid off as Maidstone won from a goal down at Concord on Saturday.
Substitute Akrofi levelled four minutes after coming on and seconds later set up the winner for James Rogers in a 2-1 success that sent United third in National League South.
Akrofi said: “I’m just pleased to make an impact. When you’re on the bench, especially when your team’s losing, your first thought is ‘can you help out and change things?’
“The first goal landed to me luckily and the second one I’ve cut it back for Rogo.
“When I scored the first thing in my head was ‘can we get the ball back?’ so we could try and get a second goal. I was pleased to score and I’m pleased for Rogo too.”
Akrofi has had to settle for a place on the bench during Stones’ nine-match winning run after losing his shirt to Adam Birchall.
He added: “It’s been tough but I’ve come out the team not because I’ve not done well, it’s more that we’ve changed the way we play.
“With me and Jay May up front, we tend to go a bit more direct.
“With Birch in there we’ve been really good and we’ve been winning so there’s nothing you can do apart from when you’re called upon next time, make sure you’re ready and prepare yourself in the best way so you can help the team.”
