George Elokobi won’t give up on catching Yeovil after Maidstone’s impressive win over the runaway National League South leaders.

United won 2-1 at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday to inflict just a fourth defeat of the season on Mark Cooper’s side.

They’re 16 points behind Yeovil, with 16 games remaining, and while the play-offs are a more realistic bet, Elokobi wants to keep the Glovers honest at the top of the table.

“We know who’s leading at the moment and we’ve just got to take it one game at a time and not look too far ahead,” said the Stones boss, whose side retained fourth spot after first-half goals from Mo Faal and Matt Rush.

“There’s plenty of points to play for at this stage of the season.

“We’ve won today but it doesn’t give us six points, it gives us three points in the right direction and we’ve got to take that and look forward to our next game against Torquay on Tuesday.

“We need to make sure we don’t look at anyone but just concentrate on Maidstone United and the opposition we’re coming up against game by game.

“The end of the season will tell us where we are but we just want to make sure we go into every game and try to get maximum points and we’ll see where that takes us come the end of the season.

“For now, we’ve got to enjoy the victory.

“Yeovil is a fantastic side - Mark Cooper is a seasoned pro at this.

“We’ve played them twice now and taken four points out of six so that’s very important. We’re heading in the right direction.”

Maidstone were back in league action a week on from their FA Cup fourth-round victory at Championship club Ipswich.

There’s been unprecedented interest on a national and international scale since last weekend’s 2-1 victory sent the non-league club through to the last 16 of the cup.

But the players’ minds were clearly on the job as they put Yeovil to the sword in front of more than 3,000 fans, ending a three-match winless run in the league.

“Our boys are an honest group of lads,” said Elokobi.

“They don’t allow occasions like the FA Cup to let them get carried away.

“They themselves are the ones driving things behind the scenes.

“We can’t take our foot off the pedal, we need to keep the momentum, we need to try and create a run for ourselves.

“Yes, we had a bit of a wobble last month but they want to get back on that train and just keep taking it one game at a time.

“That shows in training, because of the high standards and the way they hold each other accountable.

“Everyone is doing a job-and-a-half to try to get themselves into the team and the ones that aren’t in the team are working exceptionally hard to ensure they stay ready when called upon.

“It’s about the team. The team won that game for us today.”
