Use the holidays to get into athletics

15:52, 20 July 2005

SCHOOL children between the ages of eight and 15 will be given the chance to attend summer athletics camps next month.

The Star:track camps will be held at Deangate Stadium, Hoo and Oakwood Park, Maidstone.

Star:track schemes provide an opportunity for youngsters to enjoy their first taste of athletics under the supervision of experienced and fully qualified coaches in a completely safe environment.

The schemes will be managed by international class coach Chris Bowman who will provide specific instruction in pole vaulting.

Chris will be supported by British League middle distance runner David Harmer, who has completed a sports college scholarship in America and the highly respected development coach Jim Sheehy.

Further UK Athletics qualified coaches will also assist with specific events during each course.

The schemes welcome all ability levels and aim to develop skills within an exciting and fully structured programme.

The cost of each camp is £35 including all coaching fees and a goody bag containing a backpack, tee shirt, water bottle, mouse mat, handbook and completion certificate awarded on the final day.

Camps will be held at Deangate from Monday, August 15 to Friday, August 19 and at Oakwood Park from Monday, August 22 to Friday, August 26, with activities taking place from 10am to 2pm daily.

Last year more than 500 Star:track schemes were held in the UK with over 24,000 children taking part.

This is the first time the summer athletics camp has been held in Maidstone.
