Sahr Kabba scored the winning goal for Welling on his debut in the Vanarama National League on Saturday.

Former Lincoln and Havant forward Kabba struck in the 40th minute to earn Loui Fazakerley's side all three points.

Welling fielded five debutants, including on-loan Millwall keeper Tom King and striker Kabba in a new-look attack. They also lost new signing Harry Osborne to injury the previous day but his replacement Kevin Lokko impressed in defence.

After an even start, it was Guiseley who posed the first threat. Tom Craddock set up Zac Thomspon who shot wide before taking matters into his own hands minutes later, turning on the edge of the box and firing against the woodwork from the edge of the box.

Will Hatfield's long-range drive was deflected wide off Welling's Lokko and then Rob Atkinson fluffed his lines after being left unmarked from a corner,

The game then swung back in Welling's favour. An excellent surging run by Reece Harris saw him cross for Kabba and his lay-off to Tashan Adeyinka created a great opportunity only for the tall striker to lack a convincing finish at the end.

Ricky Wellard and Sam Corne both sent long-range efforts off target before Welling opened the scoring five minutes before half-time.

The impressive Xavier Vidal's deep free-kick was headed back across goal by Lokko and Kabba was on hand to turn the ball in from close range.

Chances were few and far between after the break as both teams struggled to attack with the same intensity.

It was not until the last 15 minutes with a three-man forward line that Guiseley created clear-cut chances that should have produced an equaliser.

Adam Boyes, their top scorer on the way to winning the Conference North play-off final last season, fired wide with his left foot from 15 yards and then substitute Liam Dickinson dragged his right-foot shot just past the upright.

Welling replaced both Kabba and Adeyinka in the second half as the heat took its toll.

The Wings were dealt a blow in stoppage time when Fazakerley hobbled off with an ankle injury before the hosts had to clear off the line with virtually the last kick of the game.

Welling: King, Fazakerley (Awotwi 90mins), Jefford, Chambers, Kabba (Porter 62mins), Wellard, Adeyinka (Obafemi 77mins), Lokko, Corne, Harris, Vidal. Subs not used: McEntegart, Fagan. Attendance: 505.
