Maidstone’s under-23 development squad are well on course to win the title in their first season.

Simon Austin and Kane Rice’s side moved 10 points clear in the Suburban League after beating Sevenoaks 3-0 last weekend.

Their exploits are generating plenty of interest, with gates for home games on the rise and the likes of Jordan Tingley, Ollie Freeman and goalkeeper Sam Ribbins mixing with the first team, while Mason Burstow has been on trial with Chelsea.

Rivals Aldershot have a game in hand but Stones look favourites to win the league with seven matches remaining.

“In terms of what we’re there for, development, it’s great to see some of our lads involved with the first team and get an opportunity to progress,” said joint-manager Austin.

“From where we were at the start of the season, from a team perspective but also an individual perspective, some of the players have grown and grown.

“That’s the thing that’s pleased me the most, seeing how the lads have progressed.

“Some more than others, but they’ve reached levels I didn’t expect them to reach so quickly.

“Based on that, they deserve to be top of the league.

“They see that, by sticking together as a team, you’ll be better as a group.

“That’s the foundation for enabling players to develop.

“We wouldn’t be in the position we’re in, with the number of players who we personally believe have developed, if we were bottom.

“It’s far more difficult for a player to develop and progress if they’re playing in a team that’s getting beat every week.”

The development squad are playing good football and attracting decent crowds, with home matches at the Gallagher while the first team are on their travels.

Austin said: “The supporters, from the comments I’ve heard, they enjoy watching our brand of football and it’s been great over the last few weeks to have 150-200 at games and making a load of noise.

“We’re absolutely happy to be spoken about and supported by the fans but what I would say is don’t detract from the first team.

“We don’t want a conflict between us and the first team because that’s absolutely not what it’s about and I think people need to realise there is a big difference between the levels.”
