The clockwise carriageway has stayed shut for accident investigation work and the M26 is also closed heading London-bound, between junction 3 and the M25 and remained so, as of 9pm.

The emergency services, including police officers and air ambulance crews, attended the scene shortly after midday today.

Motorists in the area are still being warned to expect delays and are advised to find alternative routes.

A post on X, on the @KentPolice7oaks account just after 5pm said the M25 closures had been lifted.

But at 5.27, National Highways told its X followers: “#M25 remains CLOSED clockwise between J5 and J6 #Godstone due to a serious incident.

“Traffic caught within the closure is travelling past the scene in lane 1. 90 mins delays clockwise and 120 mins anti-clockwise.”

Then at 6.16pm, a post on the official Kent Police X account said: “Road closures on the #M25 remain in place between J5 near the #M26 and J6, the Godstone turn-off, following a serious collision earlier today.

“Motorists should expect significant delays and where possible plan alternative routes.”

As of 7pm, the delay for motorists heading clockwise was still an hour and a half, while anti-clockwise it was 40 minutes.

By 8.09pm, the delays had reduced to 30 minutes clockwise between junctions 4 and 5.
