The body of a woman in her 50s has been pulled from a river in East Peckham.
Police were called to the waterway near Branbridges Road just after 12pm following the discovery.
Officers were still at the scene at 6pm but a spokesman for Kent Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
The woman's next of kin have been informed.
Workers from neighbouring businesses reported seeing a woman crying in a parked car nearby around an hour before the incident.
Several ambulances, around five police cars and a fire engine were at the scene, and the bridge was closed to traffic for around two hours while the body was recovered.
Two boats and a dinghy were also brought in.
Harry Stevenson, of OVS automotive consultants which is based on Branbridges Road, saw the body being recovered from the River Medway.
He said: "We noticed a bit of commotion going on by the river so I went outside to see what was going on.
"There were boats in the river and they were trying to get to the woman. It wasn't a nice thing to see and the mood was very quiet this afternoon.
"It gives you a lot to think about."
