Emergency gas works which prompted three weeks of road closures have come to an end.

Drivers using the A26 Tonbridge Road and Red Hill at Wateringbury crossroads had been met with SGN gas works since May 29.

The work to resolve the gas leak was originally set to last until June 5, however it was extended until June 19.

It came after gas company SGN confirmed it had completed its repairs on the road, but said it needed to carry out further work to abandon some old gas mains.

Reports from residents online now say the crossroads are completely open and all closure signs have been removed.

During the closure, bus company Arriva was unable to serve stops between Fountain Lane in Maidstone and Mereworth for its Service 7 bus.

However, today (June 19) in a post on X, formerly Twitter, the company said: “A whole day earlier than expected – Wateringbury A26 is open as normal again.

“With this news, you’ll be Walking on Sunshine all the way to your seat on our number 7 route today.”

Gas company SGN, said: “I can confirm these works were completed on Tuesday 18 June and our site cleared on the same day.”
