A man was left with burns to his hands after a freak house fire caused by a glass ornament in East Peckham.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in Strettit Gardens shortly before 11am.

The fire, which started in the lounge, is believed to have been sparked by heat from refracted sunlight shining onto a windowsill from a nearby glass ornament, which then spread to curtains.

Crews used a thermal imaging camera to check the fire was out and small tools to expose hotspots.

The man suffered burned to his hands as he attempted to remove the curtains, but did not need an ambulance.
